The growing importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility is shaping not only companies’ business strategies but also employees’ expectations. Increasingly, individuals are seeking employers who offer green benefits, such as subsidies for public transport, bicycles, or access to electric vehicle fleets.
For companies striving to create modern and environmentally friendly workplaces, a key challenge arises: how to align ecological initiatives with the requirements of tax law?
Green benefits and the Polish tax system
The Personal Income Tax Act (PIT) provides a broad definition of income. Employment income includes, among others, all types of cash payments as well as the monetary value of benefits in kind or their equivalents, regardless of the source of funding for these payments and benefits. As a result, many ecological benefits may be subject to taxation or social security contributions.
Currently, there is a lack of sufficient tax incentives to support the widespread implementation of green benefits. This makes it all the more important to analyse applicable regulations and appropriately manage their tax implications.
Green workplaces as part of an ESG strategy
Introducing green employee benefits is not only a response to staff expectations but also a significant component of implementing an ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategy. More and more companies are reporting their climate and environmental initiatives, and creating sustainable, employee-friendly workplaces can become a key indicator of an organisation’s social responsibility.
Green benefits – from electric fleets to support for active mobility – are tangible actions that can be reflected in non-financial reports and enhance the company’s image among investors, business partners, and prospective employees.
